Mission Video: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Trinity Fellowship Church was planted by Michael Granger, his family and a small team in Addis Ababa. They started the Ethiopian Pastors College not long after. Our first quarter mission video for 2022 shares a bit about that story. I’m grateful to God for the many ways He has been good to this church and PC. I can’t wait for you to watch this video because it tells a story of partnership, answered prayer, and the gospel going forward in the nations. It’s a story that speaks to our passion of advancing the gospel together through the ministry of our local churches. You can view the video below.

We have also posted a short written piece that speaks to our commitment to church planting. Nick Kidwell, currently a church planting resident at Covenant Fellowship Church, shares his experience of partnership as he prepares to plant a church this fall.

Sovereign Grace Churches First Quarter 2022 Prayer Requests
  • Pray that God would give the members and pastors of Sovereign Grace churches a renewed desire, and opportunities to share the gospel with unbelievers in our communities and workplaces.

  • Pray for Christians in the Ukraine asking God to protect them, and to use them to offer gospel hope as the war continues in that nation.

  • Pray for the 13 churches in the Philippines who have taken the first step of formalizing a partnership with Sovereign Grace by becoming Candidate Churches. Please pray for the elders in each of those churches as they study and work through the Sovereign Grace ordination process.

  • Pray for Dave Taylor and Mark Prater as they lead a Global Leadership Development retreat, April 7-11, asking God to help them equip leaders from 5 different nations.

  • Pray for Eric Turbedsky (Director of Church Planting) and Ricky Alcantar (Sr. Pastor of Cross of Grace Church in El Paso, TX) as they lead the “Antioch Project,” including a retreat in May, as they continue to equip Sovereign Grace pastoral teams to plant new Sovereign Grace churches.

  • Pray for the 4 Sovereign Grace Church Plants that we have planned in the Asia-Pacific part of the world over the next 24 months: Cavite – Philippines (2022/23), Bonbon – Philippines (2022/23), Negros Occidental – Philippines (2022/23), Kathmandu – Nepal (2022/23)

  • Pray that God would continue to provide financially for Sovereign Grace Churches so that we can fund the gospel opportunities He is giving us throughout the world.

MP Podcast: Missions Website

Last month we posted about the new SGC Missions website and Mark Prater highlighted more details in his most recent podcast:

We hope to really serve pastors and we hope to serve the members of our churches and maybe even those outside of Sovereign Grace in this way: we want to stir all of us for the mission of the gospel and reaching the lost with the gospel.

There are three banners on the sgcmissions.org homepage: Church Planting, Emerging Nations and Missionaries. Each has a theology behind it and a philosophy of mission and ministry captured in a brief description. Church Planting is described as “The work of establishing new congregations" and we want to establish new congregations in areas to reach the lost with the gospel. Emerging Nations is described as “The work of partnering in new places” as we have opportunities to partner with churches in the states and throughout the world. The Missionaries banner is described as “The work of reaching new cultures”. We’ve defined missionaries as being sent from local churches to areas or unreached areas where they are either going to establish a church or are connected to a church and continue to receive care and support from the sending church, and care for the church as well.

For those interested in church planting, there's a Church Planting Pathway to express interest by submitting a form. There are also two initiatives: The Antioch Project, which helps elderships who haven't planted churches before to plant churches, and Small Towns Initiative, to help plant churches in small towns in the states and throughout the world.

Under the Emerging Nations banner, you'll find a Partnership Pathway with clear steps for pastors of global churches interested in Sovereign Grace. There's also a link for short-term mission trips to connect Sovereign Grace churches who are planning trips with members throughout Sovereign Grace who are looking to serve. I’m really excited about that!

For someone who wants to give their life to being a missionary, there’s a form under the Missionaries banner to engage with the Emerging Nations team.

I think this website will really serve the pastors and members of Sovereign Grace churches, as well as anyone outside of Sovereign Grace, because it gives clear steps to be involved in gospel mission.

Official Video: My Soul Will Wait

Written by Keaton Bunting and Bob Kauflin From the album Unchanging God: Songs From the Book of Psalms, Volume 1

Waiting can be draining and discouraging. But Psalm 62 tells us we can wait for the Lord with confidence, joy, and expectation. As we pour out our hearts to the Lord, even in our darkest seasons, we know he will ever be our perfect Savior and strong defender.

Our Citizenship is in Heaven

Recently on the Sovereign Grace Church Development blog, Jon Payne, Director of Church Development and Senior Pastor of Redemption Hill Church, posted about Josh Blount’s session at the 2021 Pastors Conference entitled Our Citizenship is in Heaven: Christ's Church and Cultural Pressures:

Josh Blount is a unique gift to our family of churches, and this brilliant session was a perfect example of why I look forward to learning from Josh for decades to come. Josh is a blend of towering intellect and pastoral gentleness, theological skill and shepherding instinct. In this session he winsomely defined and analyzed three significant unbiblical pressures that churches are facing today and provided a theological alternative to help us guard the heavenly and Biblical identity of our congregations.

Given the richness of Josh's teaching and the limited time of the session, his outline (and appendix!) is a useful resource for all of us and Josh kindly agreed to let us post it here.
